CITY OF PEORIA, ARIZONA HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES MARCH 2, 2011 A Regular Meeting of the Historic Preservation Commission of the City of Peoria, Arizona, was convened at 8401 W. Monroe Street in open session at 6:15 p.m. in the Peoria City Council Chambers. MEMBERS PRESENT: Chair Shelby Duplessis, Vice Chair Karen Garbe, Commissioners Priscilla Cook, Mike Fusco, Steve Poe and Harold McKisson. MEMBERS ABSENT: Commissioner Gary Nelson. Others Present: Ellen Van Riper, Assistant City Attorney, Chris Jacques, Planning Manager, Melissa Sigmund, Planner and Cathy Griffin, Executive Assistant. Note: The order in which items appear in the minutes is not necessarily the order in which they were discussed in the meeting. *CONSENT AGENDA All items listed with a “C” are considered to be routine by the Historic Preservation Commission, and were enacted by one motion. 1C DISPOSITION OF ABSENCE: Discussion and possible action to approve the absence of Commissioner Gary Nelson from the January 12, 2011 meeting. 2C MINUTES: Discussion and possible action to approve the minutes of the Regular Meeting held January 12, 2011. Commissioner Fusco moved to approve the Consent Agenda items. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Garbe and upon vote, carried unanimously. REGULAR AGENDA 3R HISTORIC PRESERVATION ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS: Discussion and possible action to confer one or more Historic Preservation Achievement Awards from the nominations received. Commissioners McKisson and Poe recused themselves during this agenda item citing a possible conflict of interest. STAFF REPORT: Presented by Melissa Sigmund, Planner. COMMENT(s): Discussion ensued regarding the Old Gym Floor and that the flooring is on loan from the Peoria School District. COMMISSION ACTION: Commissioner Fusco moved to approve the Historic Preservation Achievement Award nomination for the salvage and reuse of the Peoria High School “Old Gym Floor” by the Peoria Arizona Historical Society. Commissioner Garbe seconded the motion and upon vote, was carried unanimously. 4R PALO VERDE RUIN NATIONAL REGISTER NOMINATION UPDATE: Presentation and discussion of the National Register nomination proposal for the Palo Verde Ruin as produced by Logan Simpson Design, Inc. Mark Hackbarth, from Logan Simpson Design, inc., provided a PowerPoint presentation pertaining to the importance of the Palo Verde Ruins as an archeological site. COMMISSION ACTION: No action necessary. CALL TO THE PUBLIC FOR NON-AGENDA ITEMS: None REPORTS FROM STAFF: Ms. Sigmund provided a brief update on the following: * Local Historic Landmark Plaques * Palo Verde National Register Update Mr. Jacques discussed progress on plans for special street and way-finding signs for Old Town.
