The Wastewater Treatment System
The City of Peoria has three wastewater treatment facilities:
- Beardsley Road Water Reclamation Facility
- Jomax Water Reclamation Facility
- Butler Drive Water Reclamation Facility
The Beardsley Facility is the City’s oldest wastewater treatment plant. It was originally placed into service in 1989 to provide wastewater treatment for the Peoria residents located generally north of Beardsley Road and east of the Agua Fria River bed. The plant went through a major expansion in 1998 to increase its treatment capacity from 300,000 gallons per day to 3 million gallons per day (MGD) and is currently rated to treat 4 MGD. The Beardsley facility uses an Activated Sludge process to create high quality effluent that is recharged in basins on the site. The City receives water storage credits for the amount of water that is recharged into the ground on an annual basis. In 2006 a new Operations building was completed on this site which contains a control room, labs, and maintenance shops for several divisions in the Utility Department.
The Jomax Facility was completed in 2004 to provide wastewater treatment for the Peoria residents located north of Jomax Road and west of the Agua Fria River bed. The plant was expanded in 2008 to 2.25 MGD and uses an Activated Sludge treatment process. The high quality effluent from the Jomax plant is currently supplied as Reclaimed water to fill the lakes and to water the golf courses, parks, and landscaping amenities in the Vistancia development thus reducing the amount of potable water supply required for that area of the city.
The Butler Drive Facility was completed in July 2008 with a current capacity of 10 MGD. This facility is a membrane bioreactor (MBR) system that not only meets today’s needs but can be easily expanded to accommodate future growth without incurring major capital expenses. This state of the art membrane treatment system provides a high quality effluent, has a small foot print, and low profile compact structures. The Butler plant recharges its effluent into off-site recharge basins and receives water storage credits that will allow the City of Peoria to extract an equivalent amount of water from the aquifer now and in the future.
