Peoria Budget Amendment Would Trim $1.2 million
Most Savings to Come From Removing Already Vacant Positions

PEORIA,
Ariz. (Jan. 14, 2010) – The Peoria City Council is expected to adopt a mid-year
budget amendment at its regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 19 – a move that would
trim about $1.2 million from the current year’s budget.
The
vast majority of that savings will come by formally removing 16 vacant staff
positions from the budget. Most of those positions have been vacant for some
time; some are the result of a recent voluntary severance program offered to
city employees. No filled positions are impacted by the action.
“These
positions are vacant, and we know we will not be re-hiring for those spots, so
we are removing them from the budget,” says Peoria City Manager Carl Swenson.
“It’s part of our push to downsize city government without impacting services to
residents.”
Peoria
continues to reduce operating expenses in the face of decreased revenues. The
city has trimmed its operating budget by over $13 million in the past 18 months,
and will continue to reduce expenses as the Fiscal Year 2011 budget is prepared.
