Special Olympics Honors City, 12-Year-Old Volunteer
8/4/2009
Peoria received two awards from Special Olympics Arizona last month. The city won the 2009 Outstanding Parks and Recreation Department award for its continuing commitment to the Special Olympics. Volunteer Zane Burtrum, 12, won the 2009 Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award for his work on “Under 8 Can’t Wait” basketball during the spring 2009 season. This is a skills-training program for children ages 5-7 with intellectual disabilities. Participants learn basketball through developmentally appropriate play designed to foster physical, cognitive and social development. Zane attended every week; interacted with all of the children during the practice sessions; and, on several occasions, demonstrated a specific skill for the children.
