Mayor Bob Barrett will have his head shaved at the Relay for Life, an event that
raises funds for the American Cancer Society.
“Hopefully it will get people out to it,” Mayor Barrett said. “The Fire
Department is going to come give me a haircut.”
Teams
have been raising funds all year for the American Cancer Society and will walk
all night. Those who choose not to walk in the event are still invited as there
be plenty of activities, including raffles, entertainment, games, food, a
celebration walk for cancer survivors and a memorial walk for those who did not
survive their battle with the disease. The mayor will be at the event for the
entire night and has a team walking in the event, which any resident can join.
“If anyone wants to join the mayor’s team, call City Hall and ask for
Stephanie,” Mayor Barrett said. Residents can call City Hall at 773-7306.
He
noted cancer prevention is a very important cause to Peoria. "Between my wife
and I, we've lost three of our four parents to cancer," Mr. Barrett said.
"Recently the Police Department lost someone to cancer, and the City Clerk's
office lost someone. It's the city's disease. And anything we can do to put an
end to this, we will do."
Peoria's Relay has also been chosen to be a recruiting site for the American
Cancer Society’s cancer prevention study. Even those not participating in the
event can come and sign up to participate in the study.
