Peoria Offers Dog-Safety, Bite-Prevention Workshops for Kids
5/14/2008
Roughly half of all
children in the United States may be bitten by a dog before age 12. The Peoria
Community Center is hosting workshops on Saturday, May 31, that will teach
children how to approach dogs safely, what to do if they encounter an unfamiliar
dog off-leash, what to do about an aggressive dog and important tips for
interacting safely with friendly family dogs. The session also will cover dog
behavior and body language, and the history of dogs in society. Taught by an
experienced dog trainer, the program includes an informative, 14-minute video
and uses discussion, role playing and other activities to learn how to stay
'bite free.' There will be two sessions that day: 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for
kids ages 5 through 7; and 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. for ages 8 through 12. The
Community Center is at 8335 W. Jefferson St. in Oldtown. Tuition is $15 for
Peoria residents; $20 for non-residents. To register, call 623-773-7137.
