Organizations Bestow Awards on City Recreation Spots
10/2/2007
PEORIA, Ariz. (Oct. 1, 2007) – Peoria’s indoor and outdoor
recreation areas have earned honors from several national and local
organizations: America in Bloom, the Construction Owners Association of America
(COAA), and Valley Forward.
America in Bloom, which promotes beautification through the use of flowers,
plants and trees, awarded Peoria its Turf and Groundcover Areas Award for the
exceptional state of the city’s playing fields. The announcement was made Sept.
27 during the organization’s national conference in Rockford, Ill.
Councilmembers Joan Evans and Cathy Carlat accepted the award during Saturday’s
Gala Banquet and Awards Ceremony.
Also on Saturday night, Peoria was awarded two Environmental Excellence Awards
by Valley Forward. The New River Trail (Rio Vista Park Segment) and Sonoran
Mountain Ranch Neighborhood Park/East Wing Mountain Trail were recognized for
their contributions to open space, recreation and connectivity. A list of all
the Valley Forward winners is available online at www.valleyforward.org.
Meanwhile, the COAA bestowed top honors on Peoria in Construction Owners Project
Leadership for construction of the Rio Vista Recreation Center. The COAA
supports project owners' success in the design and construction of buildings and
facilities. Among the criteria for Peoria’s award were: overall project
management and success; design excellence; and scheduling cost/quality
management. Select team members from the Community Services Department will
accept the award on the city’s behalf at the COAA National Convention in
Henderson, Nev., on Nov. 16.
The department also was recognized recently by the International Festivals and
Events Association for its sponsorships, and the National Recreation and Parks
Association for its overall recreation program.
