8/31/2011
The Peoria Sluggers
Special Olympics softball team was one of 28 teams from across the United States
and Canada invited to participate in the 1st Annual National Special Olympics
Regional Softball Championship Tournament this past weekend in Elgin, Ill. The
Peoria Sluggers brought home the silver medal, playing six teams but ultimately
losing to New Ulm, Minn. All food and lodging expenses were covered by Moose
International; the Peoria Sluggers raised more than $8,000 to cover airfare and
other related expenses for the trip.
Peoria’s Adaptive Recreation Division is hosting a golf game to benefit the
city’s Special Olympics team on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 a.m. at The Legend at
Arrowhead, 21027 N. 67th Avenue in Glendale. Money raised at the event will
provide the 120 athletes with sports equipment, uniforms, medals, and
transportation to valley-wide Special Olympics events. The tax-deductible fee is
$75 per person or $300 per foursome; registration deadline is Sept. 6. To
register or for more information, call the Peoria Community Center at
