Peoria Plans Veterans Day Events for Subsequent Saturday
Morning Includes 5K Run, Free Breakfast and Mayor-Led Veterans Roundtable

PEORIA, Ariz. (Oct. 28, 2010) – Peoria will stage its third annual Veterans Day Celebration and 5K run Saturday, Nov. 13, at Rio Vista Community Park.

Highlights include the 5K and accompanying one-mile Family Fitness Walk, a free pancake breakfast and a roundtable discussion with Peoria Mayor Bob Barrett and other veterans discussing their military experiences.

The day begins with registration and check-in for the 5K from 6 a.m. to 7:15 a.m. The run will get under way at 7:30 a.m., with the noncompetitive Family Fitness Walk starting five minutes later. The fitness events will begin and end near the group picnic area. The course will be along the New River bike path and past the Peoria Veterans Wall.

The free pancake breakfast will be from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

The mayor’s event will start at 8:15, with an introduction from Barrett followed by the veterans roundtable, which will take place during the pancake breakfast. Featured speakers from World War II include a Tuskegee airman and a Pearl Harbor survivor.

Following a 9 a.m. flag raising by students in the Peoria High School JROTC program, an a cappella group from Sunrise Mountain High School will perform patriotic songs and re-enactors will demonstrate life for soldiers in the Civil War. In addition, members of the public can try to scale a rock-climbing wall provided by the Arizona National Guard.
