Peoria Mayor Completes, Mails Census Form
Barrett Encourages All Residents to Do Same
3/19/2010
PEORIA, Ariz. (March 19, 2010) – Just like every
other household in the United States, Peoria Mayor Bob Barrett received his
census form this week. What did he do with it? He immediately completed it and
mailed it back.
“I want all Peoria residents to do what I did with my form,” Barrett said. “Fill
it out and mail it back as soon as you get it. This is one of the most important
things Peorians can do for their community.”
The 2010 Census is a count of everyone living in the United States. The data
from the forms are used to distribute congressional seats, determine city
districts and most importantly, distribute more than $435 billion in federal
money to local, state, and tribal governments each year. In the past, this has
meant more than $1,500 per Peoria resident per year.
“The more residents that get counted in Peoria, the more funding the city
receives,” Barrett added. “These dollars are then used to develop parks, provide
emergency services, and build roads”
The U.S. Census Bureau states that this is the shortest census form in history
and should only take about 10 minutes to complete. If a form is not returned to
the Bureau, a census taker can visit a residence up to six times to get the
information.
