Geophysical Survey of North Peoria 2003 

Anyone who has lived in Peoria for any length of time knows that the City has grown at an explosive rate. Future growth is poised to move into the northern reaches of the City where currently only coyotes and quail live. The water served to those future citizens will primarily be CAP water treated at water treatment plants. However, when available, groundwater resources will serve an important role in providing backup and peaking supplies to the northern reaches of Peoria.

Geologic conditions in the northeastern portion of Peoria were not well known because of the lack of geologic studies in the area. Given the lack of geologic knowledge about the region, the Water Resources division undertook a geophysical survey of the area to determine the viability of placing backup supply wells in the Lake Pleasant sub-basin aquifer.

Seismic Source for Seismic Refraction Study

The geophysical survey determined what kinds of material make up the geology in the study area, with the goal of identifying the geologic materials that would most likely contain groundwater. After the geophysical survey was completed, a borehole was drilled to verify that the geologic material did, in fact, contain groundwater supplies.
