Conservation Tips
All Peoria citizens must do their part to use water wisely to ensure an adequate water supply for today and future generations. Water conservation not only will help you save our precious water resources; it will also help you save money.
The following tips can help you do your part to conserve this precious resource:
OUTDOORS
- Check your irrigation system for leaks weekly - make it part of a weekly routine
- Use low water use plants and the principles of Xeriscape - check out our free packet of information that includes plant photos and descriptions
- Adjust irrigation schedule to accommodate seasonal water demand - if you're not sure give us a call or send us an email and we can help
- Adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk, or street - not only is this wasteful it also degrades sidewalks and streets faster
- Water at night or during the cool morning hours to minimize evaporation - try and program your start times so that you can see them working if possible
- Update your irrigation controller to one that has a rain sensor, weather tracking capability, or soil moisture sensor
Thinking about overseeding your lawn? Think again. Try something different this winter and save money on water, grass seed, fertilizer, and compost not to mention the time and effort it takes to install a temporary lawn. Click here to learn more.
INDOORS
- Check pipes, faucets, and toilets for leaks
- Run your washing machine and dishwasher only when they are full and you could save 1000 gallons a month
- Replace standard shower heads with low-flow heads
- Investigate the replacement of standard plumbing fixtures with low water use fixtures
- Keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap for cold drinks, so that every drop goes down you, not the drain
- If your shower can fill a one-gallon bucket in less than 20 seconds, then replace it with a water-efficient showerhead
- Time your shower to keep it under 5 minutes. You'll save up to 1000 gallons a month depending on your showerhead
- Install high efficiency toilets - check out the water conservation rebate program to see if you qualify for a City of Peoria rebate

- Plug the bathtub before turning the water on, then adjust the temperatures as the tub fills up
- Don't use running water to thaw food
- Grab a wrench and fix that leaky faucet. It's simple, inexpensive, and can save 140 gallons a week depending on the faucet
- Drop that tissue in the trash instead of flushing it and save gallons every time

- Turn off the water while you shave or brush your teeth and you can save more than 100 gallons a week
